Savage Pride by Jill Ramsower Review

⭐️ 4/5
🌶️ 1.5/5

Once again Jill Ramsower lives up to her name of being the queen of plot twists in Savage Pride. What makes it even more amazing is that she managed to give something fresh in this retelling while staying true to the original story.

Plot Summary

Zeno De Rossi and Luisa Banetti grew up together, but somewhere along the line something happened. He changed.

He stopped seeing her as a friend and started regarding her as the daughter of a soldier. A soldier in the mafia family that he might one day rule.

But then his brother comes home. A brother he has no fondness for whatsoever. When said brother starts to show interest in Luisa, Zeno suddenly starts to pay more attention to her too.

Now, she is stuck in the middle of their feud. Both brothers have things they don’t want to share and neither is a safe place for her.

My Thoughts on Savage Pride

Unpopular opinion, I’m not a fan of classics.

I’ve always felt like the emotional connection that I need with the characters are usually lacking. The plot twists tend to be more predictable, however, I’ll admit that many modern books also have this problem.

However, true to herself Jill Ramsower managed to keep things fresh in this book. I truly think she is one of the best at plot twists and she managed the same with this retelling while staying true to the original story.

Series or Standalone?

This is the first book in a duet that serves as a retelling of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. It ends on a cliffhanger. So, you really have to read the next book, Silent Prejudice.

Tropes

This is a story between childhood friends who ended up hating each other. When they are forced to see each other regularly, they end up falling in love.

Their love story doesn’t unfold fast, it is rather slow burn.

Quotes

“Some people stay with us no matter how long it’s been since we were close.”
– Gia Banetti

“I thought keeping you away would diminish my desire for you, but having you here has made me realize that I’m only fooling myself. It’s so obvious every time I’m near you, yet I fight it. The pull. My desire. It’s always been you for me—always will be—no matter how hard that is for me to accept. No matter the disrespect to my father or the disgrace I will earn among the family, I can’t deny that you are the only woman I could ever want at my side. You are worth whatever the struggle. Your strength and loyalty. Your beauty and grace. There is no other woman for me, and the thought of losing you to someone else sends me into a violent rage. I want so much more than a stolen kiss or a heated exchange of words. I want you—your body. Your soul. And I want the world to know you’re mine.”
– Zeno De Rossi
