Giovanni in A Sinner’s Promise is the perfect book boyfriend. He’s into the chase and doesn’t give up regardless of how much Elouise might reject him. His gestures are sweet beyond words.
Some might label this as dark romance, but to be honest it doesn’t come close to being dark romance. I guess if you are trying to venture into the world of dark romance, it might be a good place to dip your toes into the water. You know, getting into it gradually and all that.
Plot Summary
All his life, as the eldest son of the De Bellis family, Giovanni was raised always to become the head of the family. He was trained to be a ruthless monster that will stop at nothing to get what he wants.
His father was the one to mould him throughout his life, unsuspecting that it would be the very monster that he created that will be his downfall.
Now he is in charge and although he is a ruthless monster with no regard for others, he will also always protect those he loves at all costs. He will always make sure that they will never want for anything.
So, the first thing he does is to start looking for a house for them to live in. That way his brothers wouldn’t have to keep living in the house they were brought up in with all the horrendous memories that haunt it.
However, the realtor in charge of finding him a house, Eloise, changes his priorities. Yet, to her he is just another one of the elite assholes that comes with her dream job, being a realtor with the elite listings.
Well, that is what she thought. She thought that she could wave off his advances like with all of her other clients.
But he is temptation reincarnated and with a single look he manages to make her question everything she thought she wanted.
My Thoughts
I love Gio. I think he is one of my all-time favourite MMCs. His gestures are swoon-worthy and just perfect.
Ellie, on the other hand, is not my favourite. I found her resistance to Gio irritating. I like it when the FMCs aren’t simply pushovers who simply take what they are dealt.
But there is a difference between having some spark, whilst being submissive and being honest with yourself.
Physically the story progressed quite fast, but overall it was a bit slow for my taste. I think that the story was dragged out a bit too much.
Don’t get me wrong though. I still think that it is a good book. I like how the characters are written in a way that you can really feel what they are feeling.
Where to Read?
You can get A Sinner’s Promise by Kylie Kent on Amazon. If you buy it using my link, I’ll get a small commission at no extra cost to you.
You can read it for free with a Kindle Unlimited trail.
There is an audiobook of A Sinner’s Promise, you can listen to it for free with an Audible Premium Plus trail.
Series or Standalone?
Technically the De Bellis Crime Family series, of which A Sinner’s Promise is the first, is a series of interconnected standalones, I wouldn’t read it that way.
Each book is about a different couple and their story concludes, but there is an overarching plot that you will not be able to enjoy at all if you don’t read all of the books.
Of course, you can still understand the stories without the extra context, but the deeper plot will be lost on you. And as someone who has read all of the books, I can tell you, it’s worth it. Read them all.
Tropes
This mafia romance is the perfect example of the opposite of slow burn. Kylie did not waste time getting them together. So, if you love a good instalove story, you might love this book.

– Gio De Bellis
“I love you. I’ll be home soon. You are my everything, Ellie. Don’t forget that.”
– Giovanni De Bellis
“I like you, and when I think about you being with anyone else, I want to rip heads off. I don’t want to share you, which means you and I are exclusive. It’s simple as that.”
– Gio De Bellis
